Sun Glasses
As another summer season approaches, the issue of sunglasses once again resurfaces. Eye care specialists are frequently asked questions whether sunglasses are necessary, and is there really a difference between the cheap ones and the expensive types?
The short answer is YES to both questions.

Light, in general and, sunlight in particular is comprised of many units called wavelengths. Certain wavelength of light can damage our eye structures and can lead to corneal, lens and retinal damages.

A study has shown a definite relationship between age of onset of presbiopia (difficulty in seeing near) and exposure to sunlight. People living in the equator or in hot areas like that of the Gulf region require reading glasses 5 years earlier than those living in cold climates. Increased solar radiation has been suggested as a possible cause.

The best protection for UV light is GOOD quality sunglasses. Good being defined as one that absorbs all the harmful rays of the sun, and covers both the eyes and surrounding areas.

While many cheap sunglasses claim to absorb 100% of UV light, the fact is that these do not give the maximum amount of protection that is possible. They do absorb some, but not enough of what will ultimately damage our eyes.

Sunglasses bought on the street for Dhs.10 will do nothing except increase exposure to UV light. Meaning; the dark glasses will dilate the pupil letting in more of the damaging UV get into the eye.

Should children wear sunglasses?
Babies less than 6 months old should not be in the sun. Older children should wear hats, use strollers with canopies and, whenever possible, wear sunglasses.

Children spending long periods at the beach, water or playing in the snow should have sunglasses specifically designed for those activities.

I agree that we should wear sunglasses in order to protect against the sun, but nowadays, sunglasses are not seen as a matter of health care, but as a matter of fashion.

Yes, I think we do need sunglasses. In my opinion, if you want quality and fashionable sunglasses or eye glasses, buy a pair of Italian ones. Prada, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, are the most famous brands in what eye wear is concerned.

Eyewear is not just about improving your vision or protecting your eyes any more. These days, eyeglasses and sunglasses are often purchased as wardrobe accessories rather than as necessities and designer eyewear in particular is all about style and high fashion.

Sunglasses are very important. You should be wearing UV400 protection for eyes whenever in the sun.

I’m a firm believer in sunglasses. In our lifetimes, our eyes soak up as much solar radiation as the energy released by a one megaton atom bomb. Anything I can do to protect my peepers and keep them in top working order is worth the effort in my book. Besides, everybody looks cool in shades ;) Todd

I think we definetly need sunglasses nowadays, but not for looking good or being in fashion, and for sun protection.

We do need sunglasses. But we need them for protection, not fashion.

Of course we need them. We need them for protection, but we also need them for fashion. What better way to accessorize and look great?

Regular wear of polarized sunglasses can greatly reduce the risk of sun related eye damage.

I’m into sunglasses only when sports is in discussion.Your eyewear needs to fit your game, not the other way around. Whether it’s sunglasses, prescription eyewear, safety goggles or other eye protection, action eyewear needs to fit the criteria of your game.

When it comes to fashionable eyewear, I prefer colored contact lenses, rather than sunglasses.

I don’t need them anymore. I bought myself a pair of colored, cheap contact lenses and the change was a lot bigger. Now I have to show my eyes everywhere.

We do need them, but most people don’t wear them out of neccessity, but for appearence. The same happens with colored contact lenses!

In the same way we need contact lenses ( bifocal or multifocal), we also need sunglasses, The purpose of their use is very different, though.
